Apple has joined forces with Brightstar, a mobile phone distributor, to implement the plan. Apple and operators can encourage users to upgrade to new models as soon as possible by providing such payments to purchase old models. On the other hand, Apple and operators can also make profits once again by reselling them to overseas markets.

“The overall growth of this market is very fast,” said Israel Ganot, chief executive of Gazelle, an online handset repurchaser.

Both Apple spokesman and Brightstar spokesman declined to comment on the above news.

AT&T currently pays a $200 cash subsidy for the still-well-behaved iPhone 4S, which means that if the user upgrades to the iPhone 5 and signs for two years, they will get the phone for free. Garnott believes that 20% of consumers in USA will upgrade their smartphones this year through the "new machine replacement machine," which was only 11% in 2011.

Until now, Apple has always paid little attention to the iPhone refurbished market. This phenomenon has changed after the company's growth slowed in recent quarters. According to market research, Samsung surpassed Apple last month to become a brand of smart phone sales in the US market.
