What is Turbo

First, what is turbo?

First of all we have to figure out what is turbocharged. The turbocharged English name is Turbo. Generally speaking, if we see Turbo or T at the rear of the car, it means that the car's engine is a turbocharged engine. I believe we all have seen many such models on the road, such as the Audi A6 1.8T, Passat 1.8T, Bora 1.8T and so on.

The main role of turbocharger is to increase the intake of the engine, thereby increasing the power and torque of the engine and making the car more powerful. When an engine is fitted with a turbocharger, its maximum power can be increased by 40% or more compared to when no turbocharger is installed. This means that the same engine can produce more power after being pressurized. Take our most common 1.8T turbocharged engine, after pressurization, the power can reach the level of 2.4L engine, but the fuel consumption is not much higher than the 1.8 engine, on another level is to increase Fuel economy and reduced tailpipe emissions.

However, after pressurization, the pressure and temperature of the engine during operation are greatly increased, so the engine life will be shorter than the engine without the same displacement, and the mechanical performance and lubrication performance will be affected. To a certain extent, it limits the application of turbocharging technology to the engine.

Second, the principle of turbo

It is well known that an engine generates power by burning fuel in a cylinder. Since the amount of fuel input is limited by the amount of air drawn into the cylinder, the power generated by the engine is also limited, if the engine's running performance is already at its best. State, and then increase the output power can only increase the amount of fuel by compressing more air into the cylinder, thereby improving the combustion function. Therefore, under the current technical conditions, the turbocharger is the only mechanical device that can increase the output power of the engine without changing the operating efficiency.

The turbocharger we usually call an air compressor is actually an air compressor that increases the air intake of the engine by compressing air. In general, turbocharging uses the inertial momentum of the exhaust gas emitted by the engine to propel the turbine in the turbine chamber. The turbine then drives the coaxial impeller, which pushes the air sent from the air filter duct and pressurizes it into the cylinder . When the engine speed increases, the exhaust gas discharge speed and the turbine speed also increase at the same time, the impeller will compress more air into the cylinder, the air pressure and density increase can burn more fuel, increase the fuel amount and adjust the engine's Speed, you can increase the engine's output power.

Everybody may think that the turbocharger is very complicated, but it is not complicated. The turbocharger is mainly composed of a turbine chamber and a supercharger. The first is that the inlet of the turbine chamber is connected to the engine exhaust manifold, and the outlet of the turbine chamber is connected to the exhaust pipe. The inlet of the supercharger is then connected to the air filter duct, the outlet of the supercharger is connected to the intake manifold, and finally the turbine and the impeller are installed in the turbine chamber and the supercharger, respectively, and they are coaxially rigidly connected. Such an overall turbocharger will do well, and your engine will be " overclocked " just like a computer CPU .
