Autodesk Backs Carbon3D With $10 Million From Spark Investment Fund
**Public Company Information:**
NASDAQ:ADSK
**SAN FRANCISCO–(BUSINESS WIRE)–** On behalf of Autodesk, Inc. (NASDAQ:ADSK), I’m excited to share their recent announcement of a $10 million investment in Carbon3D, a cutting-edge company redefining 3D printing technology. This move comes from Autodesk's Spark Investment Fund, which aims to channel up to $100 million into innovative entrepreneurs and startups pushing the limits of 3D printing.
Carbon3D has developed a revolutionary technology called Continuous Liquid Interface Production (CLIP), which tackles the existing bottlenecks in the 3D printing industry, such as speed, mechanical strength, and material variety. Their innovative approach not only enhances the quality of printed parts but also bridges the gap between digital design and actual manufacturing, making it possible to produce commercial-grade components.
In December 2014, Autodesk established the Spark Investment Fund with the vision of accelerating the growth of the entire 3D printing ecosystem. It marks the first venture capital fund solely dedicated to fostering advancements in 3D printing.
Carl Bass, Autodesk's President and CEO, expressed his excitement about the partnership: "Carbon3D represents the kind of groundbreaking innovation that can truly transform manufacturing. Their Continuous Liquid Interface Production technology is a game-changer—it allows 3D printing to evolve from just prototyping to becoming a viable option for full-scale production."
Traditional 3D printers rely on a layer-by-layer process, which is slow and often results in parts with weak mechanical properties due to their layered structure. In contrast, Carbon3D’s CLIP technology uses a photochemical process that eliminates these limitations. By balancing the interaction of UV light (which initiates polymerization) and oxygen (which inhibits the reaction), CLIP continuously grows objects directly from liquid resin, achieving speeds up to 100 times faster than conventional methods.
Dr. Joseph DeSimone, Carbon3D’s CEO and co-founder, emphasized their commitment to solving long-standing challenges in 3D printing: "Our mission is to integrate hardware, software, and molecular science to make 3D printing a robust manufacturing solution. We're thrilled to have Autodesk, a global leader in design and engineering, support us in bringing this technology to market."
After their highly anticipated debut at TED 2015 and publication in *Science* magazine, Carbon3D is now focused on commercializing the CLIP technology. They plan to release an industrial-grade machine within the next year.
**About Carbon3D**
Founded in 2013 in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and headquartered in Silicon Valley, Carbon3D is revolutionizing 3D printing by delivering solutions that transcend basic prototyping. Their CLIP technology, unveiled simultaneously at TED 2015 and on the cover of *Science*, has garnered backing from prominent investors like Sequoia, Silver Lake Kraftwerk, and the Autodesk Spark Investment Fund.
