Box Alarm fire in Winnetka, 2-26-14

This report comes from Larry Shapiro:

The Winnetka Fire Department responded to a house fire on Pine Tree Lane just after 9 PM on Wednesday evening. Initially, police units were dispatched to 910 Pine Tree Lane after confirming smoke coming from the attic of a home in that area. The fire department arrived shortly after and found heavy smoke billowing from the structure at 924 Pine Tree Lane, which was later confirmed as the correct address.

As the first engine unit approached, it was immediately engulfed in thick smoke with near-zero visibility. The crew pulled past the house and maneuvered the truck into position at the driveway. The scene was described as a split-level home undergoing renovation, with heavy smoke indicating a significant fire inside. Firefighters attempted an interior attack, but the flames had already spread through the attic, forcing them to pull back.

Firefighters quickly noticed a hole in the first floor, which they believe prevented any injuries during the operation. Shortly after, the interior attack was abandoned due to the rapid spread of fire through the attic space.

The incident was upgraded to a Box Alarm, with multiple hand lines and an elevated master stream deployed from Winnetka Truck 28. Northfield Truck 29 also joined in, using its own master stream. The house is located adjacent to Tower Road, and units from Glenview and Skokie were stationed there, though they did not deploy their streams. Both aerial ladders were used to provide lighting for firefighters working on the scene.
