Chicago Fire Department Ice Rescue Training
Hey everyone,
I just got back from checking out the ice diving training session that Tim Olk was telling us about. It’s happening at the 31st Street location, and it was pretty intense! The fire department divers were out there, doing their thing in the freezing cold water. It’s amazing to see how they train for these kinds of situations—it really gives you an appreciation for what they do.
I managed to snap a few photos while I was there, and I’ve added them below. You can tell how focused and prepared everyone is—these guys clearly know what they’re doing. Tim Olk’s photos really capture the grit and determination involved in this kind of training.
Here’s a quick rundown of what I saw:
- Divers suited up and ready to go, even though the water was absolutely frigid.
- A lot of teamwork going on; it’s clear they rely heavily on each other during these exercises.
- Some serious gear checks before anyone went under the ice—safety first, always.
It’s not every day you get to witness something like this, so I’m glad I could share it with all of you. If you ever wondered how firefighters prepare for emergencies in extreme conditions, this should give you some insight. Let me know if you have any questions or thoughts about it!
Take care,
