Dudan and University Collaborate on Cellulose Ethanol Project

Dupont Danisk Cellulose Ethanol Co., Ltd. (Doudan Company) and U.S. University of Tennessee jointly announced on July 23 that they will build a pilot-scale biorefinery together with advanced technology at Fornall, Tennessee. The level of cellulosic ethanol research and development facilities.

Using this pilot-scale refinery, both parties will develop advanced technologies for the commercial production of cellulosic ethanol. The project will use the University of Tennessee's world-class know-how in cellulosic feedstock production and by-product research, and will also collaborate with Tennessee agricultural products to provide corn stover and its earliest developed switchgrass to cellulose biorefineries. Guarantee reliable supply of cellulose raw materials. It is reported that the cellulosic ethanol plant built can be flexibly converted between two types of non-food biomass feedstocks. One is corn stalks and corn stalks, and the other is switchgrass.

"We are very excited to work with Dudane." John, president of the University of Tennessee. Peters said, "Dudin's technical strength and its ability to transform scientific and technological achievements into realistic productivity, coupled with the strong support of its parent companies DuPont and Danisco, will undoubtedly increase the Tennessee Biofuels project in China and The international influence also ensures Tennessee’s leading position in the development of cellulosic ethanol.”

According to reports, the biorefinery pilot plant and the cellulosic ethanol process development facility will be built at the Nile Ferry Industrial Park. The cellulosic ethanol process development facility is a set of devices for research. Its scale is larger than that of a laboratory. In the course of research and development, it can also be used as a laboratory device to quickly adjust various process parameters. The pilot plant has a cellulosic ethanol capacity of 250,000 gallons per year and will start construction this fall and is expected to start operations in December next year.

John Pierce, Technical Director of Dudan, said: “We are ready to experiment with existing technologies to prepare them for commercialization earlier because switchgrass has a very high fiber content and is comparable to other biomass materials. In comparison, its ethanol yield is higher and its competitiveness is stronger, which makes it the preferred raw material for the production of ethanol.According to the development of technology, we will be able to produce 1,000 gallons of ethanol per acre in the near future. The current joint venture is going all out in the United States. We have completed the technological development of the conversion of two biomass feedstocks into ethanol and will soon be able to use our technology for commercial production.”

The University of Tennessee has been actively involved in the development of bioethanol. The school used Tennessee's research funding to launch energy crops such as switchgrass, and this year the local farmers planted the first large-scale switchgrass field. This kind of crop will take 3 years to fully mature. By then, these switchgrass will become the raw materials of the biorefinery, that is to say, the industrial trials of switchgrass in the United States into ethanol can be implemented in 2010. Therefore, the biorefinery plant built this time will use the corn stalks and corn stalks in the western part of Tennessee as raw materials to carry out industrial test projects. According to the biofuel project developed by the University of Tennessee to convert agricultural crops into fuel for the state, in the future, the state's biofuels will replace 30% of current petroleum fuel consumption.

Dudan Company is a joint venture company formed by DuPont and Danisco’s Genencor Corporation announced at the end of May this year that each shareholding will be 50%. This global joint venture is committed to the development of a commercial value, Advanced, low-cost technical solutions for the production of cellulosic ethanol to face the world's $75 billion business opportunities in this area. The joint venture plans to invest 140 million U.S. dollars in three years to research and develop technological solutions for the production of ethanol from a variety of non-food materials. The joint venture’s mission also includes accelerating the development of a commercial scale bio-refinery, developing renewable biofuels, expanding the value of agriculture, and leading the development of a low-carbon economy.
