I’m still trying to process the news of Wayne L. Stuart’s sudden passing earlier this month. Wayne was one of those people who seemed like they’d always be around, so it’s hard to believe he’s gone. He was just 71 when he left us unexpectedly on August 25, 2020, at his home in Orland Park, where he had lived for the past three decades. Before that, he called Calumet City home.
Wayne had an incredible career as a firefighter, starting out in Calumet City before moving on to serve as a lieutenant with the Skokie Fire Department. He dedicated over four decades of his life to protecting and serving others, retiring in 2007 after a long and distinguished career. Even after retiring, Wayne didn’t slow down. He continued working part-time at the Kurtz, Anderson, and Goodale Funeral Homes, where he helped drive funeral processions and greeted countless families with warmth and kindness. He was also actively involved in the community, serving on the Senior Citizen Advisory Committee in Orland Park.
He leaves behind his beloved wife Sandra, his sister Barbara, and several nephews and their families. Wayne was predeceased by his parents, Wayne and Helen Stuart, and an infant daughter, Stacey. Due to the ongoing health crisis, his services were held privately, which must have been difficult for his loved ones.
The Skokie Fire Department paid tribute to Wayne through their Facebook page, highlighting his dedication to the community and his colleagues. They remembered him not only as a respected lieutenant but also as someone whose presence would be deeply missed. It’s clear that Wayne touched many lives during his time both on and off duty.
Rest in peace, Wayne. You’ll be greatly missed by all who knew you.
