Labour (of Love) Day
Labour Day is the perfect time to tackle those tasks you've been postponing for months. We get it—summer is a luxury, and the last thing you want to do is spend your weekends cleaning up around the house.
Enter: The Labour Day long weekend, the ideal time to take care of those chores before fall arrives. Here are a few one-day projects you can fit into your long weekend that will leave you feeling like you can conquer the world.
Last spring, we reached out to Rümi’s Certified Professional Home Inspector for some great spring shoulder season tips. You followed this advice and got your home in tip-top shape for summer. Now it's time to prepare for fall.
We asked our experts for their best advice on fall maintenance, and they delivered. Here’s what they had to say:
**Your Furnace Room**
The furnace room often gets overlooked. Let’s face it—we don’t usually invite friends over to hang out there. Instead, we toss in clutter, close the door, and forget about this essential appliance that works so hard for us.
Now’s the time to give your furnace some attention. Have it serviced before winter hits. Winter comes fast, and furnace companies are busy during this time. Book an appointment early to avoid the rush.
**Pro Tip:** If you want to do some DIY before your service, clean or replace your humidifier filter and drain your hot water tank. If you have questions, book a virtual session with a Home Inspector—they’ll be happy to help.
**Outside Your Home**
Take advantage of a crisp, clear day and go outside. Do a 360 walk around your house. Look for signs of animals like squirrels, gophers, or birds trying to nest under your deck or in crawl spaces. If you spot any, block them off.
Next, clean up your yard. Remove branches, rake the lawn, and add seed and fertilizer before the ground freezes. This will help your lawn stay healthy under the snow.
As soon as you feel a chill in the air, turn off exterior water and drain your sprinkler system. Freezing temperatures are coming, and you want to be ready.
**Pro Tip:** Carry a small can of paint while you're checking the exterior. Touch up any woodwork as you go. Seal all your wood surfaces before the snow falls to prevent moisture and rot. If you need more paint, consider hiring professional painters now or early next spring.
**Inside Your Home**
This is where you want to check everything from top to bottom. Get ready for some neck exercises, because you'll be looking up in the attic, down in the basement, under sinks, and up at the ceilings.
Start by checking for leaks. Inspect your attic, basement, and crawl spaces for moisture or leaks. Even small drips can become big problems quickly. If you can't identify or fix the source, seek help from a plumber before mold starts growing.
You don’t want water on your floors or walls, but make sure your P-traps are filled with water. This prevents sewer gases from entering your home.
If you have a heat recovery ventilator (HRV), clean or replace its filter to keep it running efficiently. If you’re considering installing one, we can help you with that too.
**Pro Tip:** Don’t forget to change the direction of your ceiling fan. In the fall and winter, it should rotate clockwise to push warm air down.
**Safety**
Safety always comes first, so we saved the most important tips for last. These quick checks don’t take much time, but they could save your life.
1. Test your smoke detectors and CO alarms. Are the batteries fresh?
2. Check your fire extinguisher. Has it expired? Is there any corrosion around the nozzle?
3. Keep a small shovel, ice scraper, and bag of salt (or kitty litter) in your car trunk.
If you’d rather not do any work on Labour Day (we understand), let Rümi handle your to-do list or sign up for a service bundle. Follow these fall tips, and your home will be ready for the winter storms—even if you’re not.
