Remembrance Rescue Project – FDNY R5
Scott Nacheman recently discovered the FDNY Rescue 5, one of the iconic rescue trucks that was stationed at the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001. The vehicle is currently being restored in Northbrook as part of the Rescue Remembrance Project. Earlier, we shared stories about the previous unit acquired, X-FDNY R-4, which you can read here, here, and here.
According to the Rescue Remembrance Project:
"In December 2011, the project acquired the last remaining Rescue truck from 9/11 — Rescue 5. It was transported to the project’s facility in Chicago and is currently undergoing restoration. The truck will be unveiled at FDIC in Indianapolis this month.
Rescue 5 was recently repainted by Capital Truck Body in Cicero, and it's now at MPC Lighting in Northbrook for the installation of new lighting. Jacquette Custom Lettering is handling the striping and hand-painting the original artwork that once adorned the truck.
The restoration team is working hard to return the truck to its original condition, preserving its historical significance and honoring the memory of those who served."
This project is more than just a restoration — it's a tribute to the brave firefighters who responded on 9/11 and a way to keep their legacy alive for future generations. As the truck moves closer to completion, it serves as a powerful reminder of the resilience and courage shown during one of the darkest days in American history.
