SITE BITE: Reaching High-Altitude HVAC Units

Insights from an on-site visit about tackling hard-to-reach HVAC systems. This is something James Filauro, our New York-based account manager at Nationwide Coils, encounters frequently.

Having conducted hundreds of commercial site visits annually, Nationwide Coils often deals with HVAC units mounted between 15 to 30 feet high. These installations are standard in retail environments, as seen in this case, but they can pop up anywhere in industrial spaces too.

An HVAC unit we accessed during a recent service call at a major U.S. retailer.

Just recently, while visiting a middle school in Mount Vernon, I was tasked with measuring a hot water coil and a DX evaporator coil within a Carrier 7.5-ton ceiling unit located 30 feet above the ground. The building's infrastructure surrounded the unit, making access challenging. Some might find scaling heights intimidating, but personally, revisiting middle school gave me more anxiety than climbing!

Me in middle school days—back to coils now!

Instead of having the contractor lower the entire unit, which would’ve been both time-consuming and costly, I climbed up to inspect it closely. Through careful observation and a bit of ingenuity, I managed to take all necessary measurements without extra effort or expense from the contractor. It’s always satisfying to leave clients happy.

So, what did we learn from today’s visit? Always think twice before deciding whether to drop the unit; instead, reach out to us first! Whether you’re dealing with tricky installations or just need help navigating complex setups, our team is here to assist.
