Excerpts from NWherald.com:
A man was rescued after being trapped up to his waist in a grain bin at Minooka Grain, Lumber & Supply Co. on West Mondamin Street around 12:45 p.m. on Thursday. Firefighters from approximately 20 departments worked through the afternoon to carefully remove grain from the silo, and the man was successfully freed just before 4 p.m.
The individual was conscious and breathing throughout the rescue and reportedly felt well afterward. A Vac-Con vacuum truck was on site to help remove grain around the victim, allowing firefighters to work more efficiently and safely.
According to the National Agricultural Safety Database, it only takes two or three seconds for a person to become stuck in flowing grain, and within 10 seconds, they can be completely submerged. This highlights the urgency of such incidents and the importance of quick response.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with agricultural environments, particularly when working around large grain storage facilities. Despite the rapid response, the situation underscores the need for proper safety protocols and awareness when handling such equipment.
Photos from the scene show the scale of the operation and the efforts made by emergency responders to ensure the man’s safe recovery. The images were captured by Tim Olk and illustrate the seriousness of the event.
