The new motor will introduce a "instantaneous low" safety device using capacitors
In October 2006, Nisshin Motor is set to introduce an innovative voltage drop mitigation device, known as an instantaneous low-voltage safety system, which utilizes a high-performance electric double-layer capacitor developed in-house. This new technology aims to address power interruptions caused by lightning strikes or other electrical disturbances on production lines. Previously, the company had used aluminum electrolytic capacitors and lead-acid batteries for similar purposes.
According to Nisshin Electric, the adoption of electric double-layer capacitors brings significant improvements over older technologies. These capacitors not only enhance performance but also open up new possibilities for product development. For instance, while traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors could only provide a compensation time of 0.35 seconds, the new system can extend this period to between 1 and 10 seconds. This longer duration allows for more reliable protection of critical infrastructure, such as semiconductor manufacturing facilities.
Moreover, when the compensation time exceeds one second, the electric double-layer capacitor can be made smaller than its aluminum counterpart, offering greater flexibility in design. Compared to lead-acid batteries, which require replacement every few years, the new device can last up to 15 years without needing a power source change, significantly lowering maintenance costs.
Another key advantage is environmental impact. Unlike lead-acid batteries, which contain toxic materials like lead, electric double-layer capacitors are more eco-friendly, making them a sustainable choice for modern industries.
Looking ahead, the company plans to expand the application of this technology beyond industrial settings. It is expected to be used in automotive systems and wind power generation in the future. Initially, Nisshin will introduce a 200kVA version of the device for switchboards in semiconductor equipment and production lines. The first-year production is estimated to reach 10,000 to 20,000 units.
As the company scales production through overseas facilities, it aims to reduce costs further, enabling broader applications such as auxiliary power supplies for vehicles and output stabilization devices for wind turbines.
Although specific details about the electric double-layer capacitor remain confidential, the technology is said to have an energy density approximately 100 times higher than that of traditional aluminum electrolytic capacitors. The unit measures around 10 cm x 13 cm x 3 cm, operates at a rated voltage of 2V to 3V, and has a capacitance of 1,500F. Nisshin Electric is also planning to establish a mass production line for these capacitors, signaling a major step forward in energy storage innovation.
