Why Eyewear Lens Measurements Matter

We are transforming the direct-to-consumer eyewear market with our patented photo measurement system. This innovative technology keeps our costs low while delivering a simple, elegant, and highly accurate solution. At David Kind, we believe that precision is key to ensuring every customer gets the perfect fit. Our system allows us to measure your prescription lenses accurately, so you can enjoy clear, comfortable vision with every pair of frames. Our Home Try-On experience has become a favorite among our customers, helping them find their ideal frames from the comfort of home. What sets David Kind apart is the final photo we request at purchase. Using this image, we precisely map your pupils to determine your pupillary distance and vertical height—measurements typically taken in an optometrist’s office or optical shop. While each frame fits differently, our patented system ensures accuracy in calculating PD, OC, and SEG, making sure your lenses are perfectly tailored to your needs. These measurements are crucial for optimal vision. They can be taken by your doctor or through our advanced photo technology. Thanks to our innovation, we've reduced the eyeglass remake rate from 11% (the national average) to just 3%. That's a major achievement for our team, and we're proud of the difference it makes for our customers. Curious to learn more? Below, we’ve outlined some key details about these important measurements and how our patent plays a vital role in delivering the clearest, most comfortable vision. Discover more about our patent here. [Video: How Our Technology Works] **What is your Pupillary Distance (PD)?** Your Pupillary Distance is the horizontal distance between your eyes, measured in millimeters. It remains relatively stable after adulthood and ensures you look through the center of your lenses for the best visual clarity. **What is your Optical/Ocular Center Height (OC)?** This is the vertical position of the lens center, measured from the bottom of the lens to the center of your pupil. It varies depending on the frame you choose. While many brands center this automatically, David Kind is the only one that uses precise vertical measurements, which is why we ask for a photo of you wearing your selected frames. **What is your Segment Height (SEG)?** This is specific to progressive or bifocal lenses and determines where your eye sits within the lens for near, intermediate, and far vision. The SEG height is measured from the bottom of the frame and can be adjusted based on your lifestyle and daily activities. While many brands offer virtual try-ons, our Home Try-On experience gives you the chance to physically feel and test our frames. Combined with our patented photo technology, we capture the small but essential measurements that make all the difference. Inaccurate measurements can lead to blurry vision, headaches, or discomfort, which is why we go the extra mile to ensure everything is just right.
