Working fire in the Bartlett FPD, 12/11/17
From what I just saw on the Bartlett FPD Facebook page, there was a pretty intense fire last night in unincorporated Elgin. The call came in around 1760 Hilltop, and when the firefighters arrived, they found an attached garage fully engulfed in flames. Unfortunately, it spread pretty quickly to the main house too.
The situation was made even more challenging because of the strong winds and the fact that there weren't any nearby fire hydrants. That’s why they had to activate a MABAS mutual aid box to get extra help and resources on scene. You could tell just how serious it was from the photos and videos shared online. The flames were massive, and you could see the firefighters working really hard under tough conditions.
I’ve seen some incredible images taken by John Tulipano, who seems to have been there capturing everything. In one picture, you can see the firefighters silhouetted against the fire, looking so intense as they battle the blaze. Another shot shows the aftermath—just a completely destroyed garage, which is heartbreaking. There are also several photos of the firefighters with their hose lines, clearly working nonstop through the night to try and control the fire.
One thing that stood out to me was the use of drafting techniques by the Bartlett Fire Department. They had fire engines set up to pull water from nearby sources since the usual hydrant system wasn’t an option. It really highlights how resourceful these teams have to be in situations like this.
Overall, it’s a stark reminder of how dangerous fires can be, especially when they spread rapidly. My hat’s off to everyone involved for putting themselves in harm's way to protect others' homes.
