Working fire in the Bartlett FPD, 12/11/17
From what I saw on the Bartlett Fire Protection District’s Facebook page last night, there was quite an intense situation that unfolded in unincorporated Elgin. It all started on November 12th, 2017, when Bartlett firefighters got an emergency call about a garage fire on Hilltop Road. By the time they arrived, the situation had escalated quickly—there was a fully involved garage fire that had already spread into the house.
Given the scale of the fire, combined with some pretty strong winds and the absence of nearby fire hydrants, things got tricky fast. To handle this level of emergency, the firefighters had to activate a Mutual Aid Box Alarm System (MABAS) to get extra help and resources on-site. It’s always good to have those reinforcements when you’re dealing with something this serious.
I found some incredible photos taken by John Tulipano, and they really capture just how intense it was out there. The firefighters were working non-stop, battling the flames under challenging conditions. You can see the glow of the fire illuminating their silhouettes as they fought valiantly to contain it. One image shows the extent of the damage—the garage was completely destroyed. Another shot highlights the team with their hose lines, clearly giving it everything they’ve got under the cover of darkness. There are even shots of them drafting water, which tells me they were really resourceful in finding ways to keep the fire at bay.
It’s moments like these that remind us how crucial first responders are in our communities. These firefighters put themselves in harm's way every day, and seeing their hard work unfold like this is both humbling and inspiring. I hope everyone affected by this fire gets the support they need moving forward.
