This type is also known as a 2:1 elliptical head. It is more cost-effective due to its compact design, with the height being just one-quarter of the diameter. The radius varies between the major and minor axes, making it ideal for many industrial applications.
A hemisphere is the most efficient shape for a head, as it evenly distributes pressure across the surface. The radius of the head is equal to the radius of the cylindrical part of the vessel, ensuring structural integrity and performance under high pressure.
These heads feature a dish with a fixed radius (CR) that depends on the specific type of torispherical head. The transition from the cylinder to the dish is called the knuckle, which has a toroidal shape, providing both strength and flexibility in design.
Most Common Types of Torispherical Heads
This is a torispherical head where the dish radius equals the diameter of the cylinder it is attached to. The knuckle radius is typically one-tenth of the cylinder's diameter, offering a balanced combination of strength and material efficiency.
Also referred to as a semi-ellipsoidal head, this type has a dish radius of 90.45% of the cylinder's diameter (ICR = 0.9045 x OD). The knuckle radius is approximately 17.29% of the cylinder’s diameter (IKR = 0.1729 x OD), providing a smooth transition and enhanced load distribution.
