Ambulance stolen from local hospital (more)
The Daily Herald recently published a follow-up article regarding the theft of an Arlington Heights ambulance from Northwest Community Hospital last week. According to police reports, under the cover of darkness, Samantha Sligar managed to exit Northwest Community Hospital unnoticed and climbed into the driver's seat of an unattended and unlocked ambulance. The two paramedics from Arlington Heights had just wheeled a patient into the emergency room and were restocking supplies when Sligar took off with ambulance number four around 4 a.m. on Friday.
Two hours later, and approximately 150 miles away, the ambulance was found abandoned near Interstate 57. Rantoul, Illinois, police promptly arrested Sligar, placing her in handcuffs. During questioning, she claimed she intended to head to her job at a St. Louis department store, though she admitted she also considered driving to Marion, Illinois. She mentioned that both her car and wallet had been stolen.
What happened during those two hours remains a chaotic tale. Authorities stated that the Arlington Heights paramedics noticed the missing ambulance within a short 20-minute window. A statewide alert was issued, and Rolling Meadows police were among the first responders to spot the vehicle. They followed it closely as it moved onto eastbound I-90, with multiple squad cars from different departments joining the pursuit.
At 4:40 a.m., an emergency broadcast reached nearby areas. South suburban Matteson police intercepted the ambulance heading south on I-57, ordering Sligar to stop. However, she ignored their commands. Later attempts by Manteno police and Kankakee County officers to halt the vehicle were unsuccessful. Reports indicated that Sligar drove recklessly at high speeds, forcing other vehicles off the road while flashing its lights and sirens. Authorities avoided using force to prevent accidents, but their efforts were met with little success.
As the ambulance neared the Ford/Champaign county line, the situation became increasingly tense. Troopers assigned to take over the chase were already dealing with a major accident involving several semi-trucks at milepost 211. Traffic was gridlocked behind the wreckage, complicating matters further.
In response, Rantoul police strategically placed stop sticks—spike strips designed to deflate tires safely—across the southbound lanes. These devices successfully punctured the front left tire of the ambulance, causing it to lose air gradually. Despite this, Sligar continued driving for a short distance before finally crashing to a halt around milepost 250. Rantoul police detained her peacefully and held her inside the police station.
