Chicago firefighters responded to a fire at a commercial building located at 1008 S. Kilbourn Avenue this morning around 8 AM. The blaze broke out in the center of a one-story, 100 x 125-foot brick structure, and it quickly spread through the roof. Due to the intensity of the fire, the incident was escalated to a 2-11 Alarm before crews managed to bring it under control.
According to a brief article from *The Chicago Tribune*, the building was a factory that was occupied when the fire started. Fortunately, all occupants safely evacuated, and no injuries were reported.
Jeff Rudolph, a local photographer, was on the scene and captured several images showing the harsh winter conditions. The cold weather and heavy snowfall made the firefighting efforts more challenging for the crews.
One of the photos shows Chicago Engine 38 positioned at a hydrant during the 2-11 alarm. Another image highlights Shop Spare D551 also responding to the call. Firefighters on top of Engine 38 were seen covered in ice, clearly struggling with the freezing temperatures.
Chicago Squad 2A was shut down after using a master stream from the Snorkel to tackle the flames. Meanwhile, Tower Ladder 10 used an elevated master stream to cool down hot spots after the fire was brought under control. Truck 36’s crew worked with hand tools since their rig was parked a block away.
Engine 113 was also pumping water at the scene, contributing to the large-scale response. In one of the most striking photos, a firefighter from Engine 38 is shown with a thick layer of ice forming around his helmet, emphasizing the extreme conditions faced by the crews.
