Demonstrators gathered to demand racial justice and hold police departments accountable for their treatment of communities of color. The protest turned tense when dozens of activists were arrested after staging a sit-in in the middle of the street. Their goal was to disrupt the largest gathering of public safety officials in the country, which attracted over 14,000 attendees. Thousands of protesters marched from the Chicago Police Department headquarters to McCormick Place, where the International Association of Chiefs of Police held its annual meeting. The demonstration was organized by local community groups calling for systemic change in policing practices across the nation. "We’re here to be heard," said Maria Hadden, a prominent protester. "We want to show that Black lives matter and push this powerful organization to rethink how they engage with our communities. We believe more funding should go into social services instead of policing." Another group of demonstrators blocked traffic at Cermak and Indiana Avenue, leading to the arrest of about a dozen people after they refused to move. The protests highlighted ongoing tensions between activists and law enforcement in the city.
