The demonstrators were calling for racial justice and systemic change in policing. Dozens of protesters were taken into custody during the demonstration, many of whom were part of a sit-in that blocked traffic in the middle of the street. Their goal was to disrupt the largest gathering of public safety officials in the country, which attracted over 14,000 participants. The protest began with a march from the Chicago Police Department headquarters on 35th Street and Michigan Avenue to McCormick Place, where the International Association of Chiefs of Police held its annual meeting. Organized by local community groups, the event aimed to pressure law enforcement agencies across the U.S. to rethink their engagement with communities of color. "We want our voices to be heard," said Maria Hadden, a protester and organizer. "This is about showing that Black lives matter and pushing this powerful organization to make real changes in policy. We’re calling for less funding for policing and more investment in community services." Another group staged a sit-in near Cermak Road and Indiana Avenue, blocking traffic for several hours. Police eventually arrested about a dozen individuals after they refused to move from the road.
