Fire historian suffers huge loss

Well-known fire historian, antique restorer, and member of the SPAAMFAA, Ken Soderbeck, who owns Hand in Hand Restoration, recently faced a devastating fire at his shop. An article detailing the incident can be found HERE and HERE.

Despite the tragedy, the five major pieces Ken was restoring—two steamers, two hand carts, and an American LaFrance Roadster—were saved, with only minor damage sustained. Unfortunately, much of Ken’s personal collection was lost, including helmets, buckets, bugles, photos, negatives, silk screens, and valuable historical records that documented the legacy of American LaFrance. The emotional and physical toll has been immense.

Since the fire, there has been an overwhelming response from friends, colleagues, and the broader fire restoration community. People from all over have traveled to Jackson, Michigan, to lend a hand, offering support in any way they can. I visited Ken’s shop on Sunday and spent several hours polishing the chrome and brass on one of the steamers, along with other parts. It was heartbreaking to see the extent of the damage, not just to the building but to the life and work Ken had poured into it over the years.

If you're interested in helping, there's a donation fund set up to assist Ken and his wife Aggie in rebuilding their lives. You can learn more about the fund and how to contribute by clicking HERE. For those planning to attend the annual fire flea market in Jackson, you’ve likely visited Ken’s shop before. His presence is well known and respected within the community.
