Fire historian suffers huge loss

Well-known fire historian, antique restorer, and member of the SPAAMFAA, Ken Soderbeck, who owns Hand in Hand Restoration, recently faced a devastating fire in his shop last week. You can read more about the incident HERE and HERE. The fire was a huge blow to Ken, not just financially, but emotionally as well.

Thankfully, the five major pieces he was restoring—two steamers, two hand carts, and an American LaFrance Roadster—were saved, with only minor damage. However, much of Ken’s personal collection was lost, including rare helmets, buckets, bugles, photos, negatives, silk screens, and important historical records that documented the history of American LaFrance. It's heartbreaking to see so much of his life's work destroyed in such a short time.

Since the fire, there has been an overwhelming amount of support from friends, colleagues, and the broader fire restoration community. People from all over have traveled to Jackson, Michigan, to offer their help in any way they can. I visited on Sunday and spent several hours polishing the chrome and brass on one of the steamers, along with some of the smaller parts. It was humbling to be part of the effort.

The loss of the building itself, which had been a central part of Ken’s life for many years, is truly devastating. If you're interested in helping, there's a donation fund set up to support Ken and his wife Aggie as they rebuild. You can learn more about it HERE. For those planning to attend the annual fire flea market in Jackson, you've probably stopped by Ken's shop before—it's a must-visit for fire history enthusiasts.
