House fire in Highland Park, 2-12-15
This afternoon, Highland Park firefighters responded to a call at 24245 St. Johns Avenue after workers reported seeing flames in the insulation space between the second floor and the attic of an unoccupied two-story home undergoing renovations. The structure, which is quite large, was not inhabited at the time of the incident. Upon arrival, the first responding crews found heavy smoke and quickly escalated the alarm to Code 4, indicating an active fire. Thanks to an aggressive firefighting effort, they managed to confine the blaze to its point of origin.
Mutual aid support came from neighboring departments including Highwood’s Truck 37, Lake Forest’s Engine 412, Deerfield-Bannockburn’s Truck 20, and Northfield’s Truck 29. From Highland Park, the units present included both ambulances, all three engines, along with the chief and battalion chief.
The attached images, taken late in the situation, vividly capture the aftermath of the fire. These photos, courtesy of Larry Shapiro, provide a detailed look at the damage and the significant efforts made by firefighters to control the situation. One image shows the Seagrave fire engine on site, another highlights a Pierce fire engine connected to a hydrant, and there are several others that depict the extensive work carried out to extinguish the flames.
