It’s a Win-Win for Rümi & WINS
Rümi's monthly volunteer opportunities at the Women in Need Society (WINS) are highly sought after by Rümineers. These 3-hour shifts offer a unique chance to connect with colleagues and support a cause that’s deeply rooted in our community. It’s more than just volunteering—it’s about making a real difference.
Our partnership with WINS began in 2022 when Rümi launched its ügive program, a community investment initiative aligned with our core values: Caring, Collaboration, Agility, Integrity, and Safety. We believe in the power of working together to create happiness and help people build their "happy place." WINS has been an incredible partner in this mission.
WINS provides essential resources, programs, and services to women and their families facing challenges in Calgary. Through their thrift stores, educational programs, and support services, they empower individuals to regain independence and rebuild their lives. When organizations like Rümi and WINS join forces, the impact is huge—and we’ve seen it firsthand.
As part of Rümi’s commitment to both our community partners and employee engagement, Rümineers are given one full workday (or two half-days) each year to volunteer. In 2023, Rümineers and some ATCO employees contributed over 93 hours of service to WINS. That effort helped sort nearly 3.5 tons of clothing—equivalent to $24,000 in value. A truly impressive result!
So, what does this mean for WINS? Kevan Eldridge, WINS Fund Development Coordinator, says it best: “We couldn’t have done what we did last year without the help of our volunteers, especially those from Rümi.â€
In 2023, inflation spiked and more people moved to Calgary, increasing the demand for WINS’ services. Volunteers like Rümi were critical in helping WINS meet this challenge. For example, WINS’ house-to-home program—which provides basic necessities to clients—saw a massive increase in need. In 2022, the program provided $560,000 worth of support. By July 2023, that number had already surpassed $500,000, and the total nearly doubled by the end of the year. Without extra help, this growth wouldn’t have been possible.
Kevan adds, “Rümi’s dedication goes beyond thanks. When Rümineers come to our facilities and see the impact of their efforts—like the millions of dollars in support and the millions of pounds of goods saved from landfills—they’ll understand it’s your contributions that make our work possible.â€
For Rümineers, no thank you is needed. Whether it’s connecting with team members on a volunteer shift, participating in donation drives, or seeing the real-world results of their efforts, partnering with WINS has been a true win-win.
At Rümi, living our values every day is a priority. Supporting WINS in empowering women during tough times is something we’re proud to do.
As National Volunteer Week kicks off, it’s a great time to reflect on the power of collaboration. Organizations like Rümi and WINS show what’s possible when we unite around a shared goal. We’re honored to be part of WINS’ journey and excited for the future of our partnership.
Thank you to all our Rümineers for embodying our value of caring, and to WINS for their amazing work in improving the lives of so many in our community.
