It’s a Win-Win for Rümi & WINS

Rümi's monthly volunteer opportunities at the Women in Need Society (WINS) are highly sought after by Rümineers. These 3-hour shifts, offered once a month, are quickly filled as they provide a meaningful way to connect with colleagues and support a cause that’s deeply rooted in our community. Our partnership with WINS began back in 2022 when Rümi selected them as a key partner for our ügive community investment program. Guided by our core values—Caring, Collaboration, Agility, Integrity, and Safety—Rümi is committed to making people happy in the places they live. We believe in the power of collaboration, and WINS has been a perfect match in helping us create real impact. WINS provides essential resources, programs, and services to women and their families facing hardship in Calgary. Through their thrift stores, educational initiatives, and support programs, they help empower individuals and promote self-sufficiency. When organizations like Rümi and WINS join forces, the results are powerful—and we've seen it firsthand. As part of our commitment to both our community partners and employee engagement, Rümineers are given one full workday (or two half days) each year to volunteer. In 2023, Rümineers, along with some ATCO employees, contributed over 93 hours of service to WINS. That’s equivalent to sorting nearly 3.5 tons of clothing—valued at $24,000! A truly impressive achievement. So, what does this mean for WINS? According to Kevan Eldridge, WINS Fund Development Coordinator, “We couldn’t have done what we did last year without the help of our volunteers, especially Rümi.” 2023 was a challenging year with rising inflation and a surge in people seeking support in Calgary. More women turned to WINS than ever before, and thanks to the dedication of volunteers and donors like Rümi, WINS was able to meet the growing demand. Looking at the numbers, WINS’ house-to-home program—which provides basic necessities to clients—saw a dramatic increase in 2023. By July alone, the program had already given away over $500,000 worth of support, nearly doubling the amount from the previous year. As Kevan explains, this growth was unprecedented, and without extra support from volunteers like Rümi, WINS wouldn’t have been able to keep up. “Rümi’s support goes beyond just gratitude. When Rümineers visit our facilities and see the impact of their efforts—like the millions of dollars in aid and the millions of pounds of goods saved from landfills—they understand that it’s their contributions that make our work possible,” Kevan says. For Rümineers, though, no thanks is needed. From connecting with team members during a shift to organizing donation drives and seeing the real-world impact of their work, partnering with WINS has been a rewarding experience. At Rümi, living our values every day is a priority, and supporting WINS in empowering women during tough times is something we take very seriously. National Volunteer Week is here, and it’s a great time to reflect on how much can be achieved when organizations like Rümi and WINS come together with a shared mission. We’re proud to be part of WINS’ journey and excited about the future of our partnership. Thank you to all our Rümineers for embodying our value of caring, and to WINS for their incredible work in improving the lives of so many in our community.
