Luo Luo: Dual fuel power is not a good choice

According to Rolls-Royce Marine, dual-fuel engines (gas/diesel) are not a good choice for both engineering feasibility and economics compared to the Bergen lean-burn pure gas power solution.
At an international maritime media conference held in Ulsteinvik, Norway, Oddbjorn Eliassen, president of the Rolls-Royce Marine merchant ship, disagreed with the dual fuel-powered solution proposed by most speakers at the Mercator Media Gas Fuelled Ships seminar in Rotterdam, the Netherlands.
Eliassen says pure gas-powered engines are a better engineering solution than dual-fuel hybrid engines. Dual fuel power can't be optimized to the best, whether it's gas or diesel. Pure gas engines are more efficient, such as the Bergen lean-burn solution. In addition to the advantages of fuel consumption, the pure gas solution eliminates the need to install gas and diesel fuel tanks and their systems on board, saving investment costs and reducing the space occupied.
Another big problem with dual-fuel engines is the poor load performance. When changing to the gas-powered mode, it takes about 2 minutes to react to part of the load, which is not suitable for port use.
Pure gas engines also produce less methane than dual-fuel gas models. Methane is also a greenhouse gas that is 21-25% more aggressive than carbon dioxide.
