Newport Township’s new squad ready for service
I just got some updates from my friend who works with the Newport Township Fire Protection District (FPD). They recently acquired a used 1985 Mack MR/Saulsbury heavy rescue vehicle with an impressive 8-ton, 33-foot National Crane from the Lutherville Volunteer Fire Company (VFC) in Maryland. The deal went through back in March, and they're now putting in a lot of effort to get it fully operational.
The new addition, named Squad 1455, will be stationed at Station 2 on Delaney Road since its height makes it incompatible with the main headquarters. This new rig is set to replace two older R-Model Mack units, Squad 1455 and 1456, which have been handling extrications, fires, and Special Response Team (SRT) calls. The new unit will not only provide backup but also enhance their firefighting capabilities with air-packs, a 30-kilowatt generator, and plenty of ground lighting.
Interestingly, this heavy rescue vehicle was originally purchased by the Lutherville VFD back in 2008. Since then, it’s undergone some cosmetic and mechanical upgrades. The current team has been working hard to address minor mechanical issues, repair any corrosion, and install new radios and an Opticom system. They’ve also been transferring over essential tools from the older rigs, though there’s still some decal work left to do. The trench box, previously mounted on one of the old squads, is being relocated to a smaller trailer that can be towed by a pickup truck.
One of the most exciting aspects of this acquisition is that the entire restoration project, including the new paint job, lettering, and necessary repairs, has been generously donated by two individuals at no cost to the department. It’s amazing how much community support can contribute to enhancing emergency response capabilities.
As for the older R-Model Macks, they’ll soon be declared surplus property and put up for sale. This move marks a significant upgrade for the Newport Township FPD, allowing them to better serve their community while maintaining their commitment to safety and efficiency.
Overall, it’s great to see how this acquisition is bringing new life to an old piece of equipment, and I’m sure the residents of Newport Township will appreciate the enhanced services this new rig will bring.
