Of interest … Africa Fire Mission

From excerpts sourced from ChicagoTribune.com: A group of firefighters from across the United States, led by Hank Clemmensen, recently wrapped up a two-week mission in Nairobi, Kenya. The team conducted a crucial annual training seminar for over 250 local firefighters under the umbrella of Africa Fire Mission, a non-profit organization founded by David Moore Jr. Moore, a former firefighter from Ohio, established the organization after witnessing dire conditions during a visit to Africa with Mission of Hope International. The group has grown to include approximately 30 regular volunteers, shifting its focus to education due to the high costs—around $20,000—to ship used firefighting gear to Africa. As Clemmensen pointed out, simply donating equipment without proper training often results in unused gear gathering dust, particularly when manuals and labels are in foreign languages. He emphasized the importance of equipping not just with tools but also with knowledge. Clemmensen, along with Lt. Brooks Watson from the Chicago Fire Department, played a pivotal role in securing a recent donation of essential gear. Fire departments in the U.S. must comply with stringent regulations, requiring thorough documentation before any equipment can be sent abroad, given that they cannot be reused after ten years of service. Historically, Nairobi had limited resources; there was only one fire truck stationed at the airport to comfort international travelers, while larger corporations and embassies maintained their own emergency response teams. The most vulnerable population consists of the one million residents in five slum areas, where makeshift homes constructed from salvaged materials pose significant risks. These training sessions have been instrumental in enhancing the capabilities of local firefighters, providing them with both physical support and vital skills needed to respond effectively to emergencies. As the mission continues, the emphasis remains on empowering communities through education and sustainable aid. Attached is a photograph from the December training session in Nairobi, showing some participants wearing protective gear generously donated by the Chicago Fire Department.
