Of interest … Africa Fire Mission
From excerpts sourced from ChicagoTribune.com:
A group of 14 retired and active firefighters, led by Hank Clemmensen, recently concluded a two-week mission in Nairobi, Kenya. During their visit, they conducted an annual training seminar attended by over 250 local firefighters under the auspices of Africa Fire Mission, a non-profit organization founded by David Moore Jr. Moore, a former firefighter from Ohio, established this initiative after witnessing dire conditions during a trip to Africa with Mission of Hope International. Now boasting around 30 regular participants, the group has shifted its focus to education due to the high costs associated with transporting used firefighting equipment overseas.
Clemmensen, known for his extensive background in the field and connections within the International Association of Fire Chiefs, played a pivotal role in leading discussions on leadership for approximately 25 brigade chiefs. His expertise proved invaluable, particularly in addressing complex topics like navigating political interactions and engaging with community stakeholders.
One of the significant challenges highlighted by Clemmensen is the improper utilization of donated resources. Often, aid sent to developing nations ends up unused in storage facilities because recipients lack proper guidance on operation, compounded by language barriers in manuals and labels. Clemmensen and Brooks Watson of the Chicago Fire Department spearheaded efforts that resulted in substantial equipment contributions. However, American fire departments impose rigorous documentation requirements to ensure compliance with regulations prohibiting post-decade service usage.
Historically, Nairobi’s firefighting infrastructure was severely limited. For years, there existed only one fire truck stationed at the airport—a strategic move by the Kenyan federal government to instill confidence among international travelers. Additionally, several embassies and major corporations maintained private emergency response units.
According to Clemmensen, the most susceptible population includes the one million inhabitants residing in five slum areas characterized by makeshift structures constructed from salvaged materials.

This initiative underscores the importance of not just providing tools but also empowering communities through knowledge transfer, ensuring sustainable impact in regions facing critical needs.
