Of interest north of the border … Burlington Rescue Squad

Excerpts from the journal times.com:

The Burlington Rescue Squad is set to dissolve by the end of the year due to a growing number of emergency calls and a significant drop in volunteer participation. This decision will leave the City of Burlington Fire Department responsible for providing rescue services to residents. Officials from the Town of Burlington are currently in discussions with the city about a potential contract for emergency medical services after December 31st. Both the town and the city have their own fire departments, but the city’s department plans to expand its staff significantly.

As part of this expansion, the city fire department will hire three additional full-time and two part-time fire/EMS personnel, bringing the total paid staff to five full-time, twelve part-time, and one part-time administrative assistant. In addition, the department still relies on volunteer firefighters to support operations.

It seems likely that the town will eventually contract with the city for rescue services. The current rescue squad has around 20 members, and many of them may choose to continue serving with the city fire department or other local volunteer groups.

Founded in 1946 as a nonprofit organization by the Burlington Rotary Club, the rescue squad has been responding to between 1,300 and 1,600 emergency calls annually in recent years. At one point, it also provided service to parts of Dover, Kenosha County, and Walworth County.

The Rescue Squad Board of Directors recently concluded that continuing operations was no longer feasible. Earlier this year, the squad and the city fire department had announced they were exploring a merger. However, after considering options like focusing only on town calls, they determined that it was not a viable solution.

Some of the rescue squad's equipment will be transferred to both the city and town fire departments, while the remaining gear will be donated to other departments across the state that need assistance.
