Excerpts from the journal times.com: The Burlington Rescue Squad is set to dissolve by the end of the year due to rising call volumes and a shrinking pool of volunteers. This decision will leave the City of Burlington Fire Department to take over rescue services for local residents. Town officials are currently in talks with the city about a potential contract for EMS services after December 31st. Both the town and the city have their own fire departments, but the city plans to expand its staff by hiring three full-time and two part-time firefighters and EMS personnel. This will bring the total paid staff to five full-time, twelve part-time, and one part-time administrative assistant, along with volunteer firefighters. It seems likely that the town will contract with the city for emergency rescue services. The rescue squad currently has around 20 members, and some may choose to join the city fire department or other local volunteer groups. This transition could help ensure continued coverage without a gap in service. Founded in 1946 as a nonprofit by the Burlington Rotary Club, the rescue squad has handled between 1,300 and 1,600 calls per year in recent years. At its peak, it also served parts of Dover, Kenosha County, and Walworth County. However, the board recently decided that maintaining operations was no longer feasible. In April, the rescue squad and the city fire department announced they were exploring a merger. They even considered focusing only on town calls, but last week, that option was ruled out. As a result, the squad will be dissolved, and its equipment will be distributed—some to the city and town fire departments, and the rest to other departments across the state in need. This development marks the end of an era for the volunteer group, which played a vital role in the community for decades. While the future of emergency response in the area is still being worked out, officials hope this transition will provide stable and efficient care for residents moving forward.
