Unique Station 2 for Newport Township
In Wadsworth, Illinois, located on the northern edge of Lake County, the Newport Township Fire Protection District serves an area of 33 square miles. Their main fire station is situated off Wadsworth Road, just east of U.S. Route 41. This fully equipped station houses a tanker truck, two engines, a pumper squad, two ambulances, a utility vehicle, a staff car, an ATV, and a brush unit. To improve response times for the northern part of their district, the FPD has rented a portion of a barn on the property of Doug Reno, a member of the department.
Doug Reno, not only a firefighter but also a passionate collector, maintains several vintage fire trucks on his property and even shares space with some of the Newport FPD’s equipment. One of the most notable pieces in the Newport fleet is a 1977 Mack engine, known as Engine 141, which carries 4,000 feet of 4-inch hose. Unlike other units, it features a black cab roof and was originally from Ligonier, Pennsylvania. It was acquired through the generosity of two department members.
Another remarkable piece is a 1951 Willys Jeep that serves as a parade unit, equipped with a 100-GPM front pump and a 150-gallon water tank. The department also owns a beautifully restored 1969 Dodge Power Wagon, once used as a brush unit. A 1981 R-Model Mack box truck is designated as a Heavy Rescue unit, carrying TRT supplies, while another 1988 R-Model Mack flatbed is equipped with a 6,000-pound knuckle boom crane, often used as a foam tender.
Doug's personal collection includes a 1975 Ward LaFrance Ambassador engine labeled for the Wadsworth Fire Department (Ohio), a 1971 CF Mack engine that was later refurbished by Pierce for the Geneva Fire Department, and a Mack engine from Duncannon, Pennsylvania. These vehicles are kept on his property, along with the Newport FPD’s crane truck, making it a unique spot for both emergency services and historical preservation.
