Unique Station 2 for Newport Township

In Wadsworth, Illinois, located at the northern tip of Lake County, the **Newport Township Fire Protection District** serves an area of 33 square miles. Their main fire station is situated off Wadsworth Road, just east of U.S. Highway 41. This well-equipped station houses a variety of apparatus, including a tanker, two engines, a pumper squad, two ambulances, a utility vehicle, a staff car, an ATV, and a brush unit. To improve response times for the northernmost part of their district, the FPD has established a satellite location in a barn owned by one of its members, Doug Reno. This secondary facility, located on Doug's property at 42874 Delaney Road in Zion, allows the department to maintain a closer presence in the area. The space also houses a crane truck that is stored on a neighboring farm. These strategic arrangements help ensure quicker access to emergency services for residents in the district’s more remote regions. Doug Reno is not only a dedicated firefighter but also a passionate collector of vintage fire equipment. His personal collection includes several historic fire trucks, some of which are housed on his property and even on another neighbor’s land. Among the Newport Township Fire Protection District’s active apparatus are: - A 1977 CF Mack engine with 4,000 feet of 4-inch hose. This unique rig features a black cab roof and was previously used in Ligonier, Pennsylvania before being acquired through the generosity of two department members. - A 1951 Willys Jeep parade piece equipped with a 100-GPM front-mounted pump and a 150-gallon water tank. - A beautifully restored 1969 Dodge Power Wagon W-300, once used as the department’s brush unit. - A 1981 R-Model Mack box truck designated as a "Heavy Rescue" unit, carrying TRT supplies. - A 1988 R-Model Mack flatbed with a 6,000-pound knuckle boom crane, often used as a foam tender for the Quad 2 ARFF unit. Doug’s personal collection includes notable pieces such as: - A 1975 Ward LaFrance Ambassador engine labeled for the Wadsworth Fire Department (Ohio), featuring a 1,250-GPM pump and a 500-gallon water tank (serial number 80-1129). - A 1971 CF Mack engine that was originally used by the Geneva Fire Department in Kane County, Illinois, and later refurbished by Pierce in 1987. - A CF Mack engine from Duncannon, Pennsylvania. These vehicles represent not only the history of firefighting in the region but also the dedication of individuals like Doug Reno, who keep these pieces of fire service heritage alive. Whether it's through the efforts of the Newport Township Fire Protection District or the personal passion of collectors, the legacy of fire service continues to thrive.
