Wheeling 2nd Alarm EMS Box 1-31-12

Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the Wheeling Fire Department received a call about workers feeling unwell at a local manufacturing facility. Upon arrival at 750 Northgate Parkway, firefighters detected extremely high carbon monoxide (CO) levels and immediately evacuated the building. They began ventilating the area while working to locate the source, which was traced to a piece of machinery. One worker initially showed symptoms and was taken to a nearby hospital. Soon after, several others reported similar issues, prompting an EMS Box Alarm to be called in for additional ambulances. Units from Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Northbrook, and Buffalo Grove responded. Wheeling Ambulance 42 was set up as a triage unit due to the number of affected individuals. Firefighters and paramedics worked quickly to assess and transport those in need. As more workers came forward with symptoms, the EMS Box was escalated to the second level, leading to the arrival of additional ambulances from Prospect Heights, Highland Park, Barrington, Glenview, and Des Plaines. Over 100 workers gathered outside while crews worked to lower CO levels to safe levels. Larry Shapiro was on the scene and captured several powerful images. Among them, one shows ambulances from Northbrook and Lincolnshire-Riverwoods arriving after the alarm was raised. Another image features a worker being escorted to a Northbrook ambulance for transport. A Buffalo Grove firefighter assists another patient, while Wheeling firefighters switch out air tanks before re-entering the building. Des Plaines Ambulance 71 is seen leaving with two patients, and workers approach Glenview Ambulance 8 for transport to a hospital. Ambulances from Highland Park, Barrington, and Wheeling are staged before being released without any further patients. In total, 13 workers were transported to four different hospitals. Once all were safely accounted for, the Box Alarm was called off, and remaining units were released. Meanwhile, neighboring Buffalo Grove responded to a small fire at an industrial building just a block away, with assistance from an Arlington Heights ambulance and Northbrook Tower 12.
