Wheeling 2nd Alarm EMS Box 1-31-12
Shortly after noon on Tuesday, the Wheeling Fire Department received a call about workers feeling unwell at a local manufacturing facility. Upon arrival at 750 Northgate Parkway, firefighters detected extremely high carbon monoxide (CO) levels and immediately evacuated the building. They began ventilating the area while working to locate the source, which was eventually traced to a piece of machinery. One worker initially showed symptoms and was taken to a nearby hospital. Soon after, several more employees reported similar issues, prompting an EMS Box Alarm to be issued for additional ambulances. Units from Long Grove, Lincolnshire-Riverwoods, Northbrook, and Buffalo Grove arrived on scene.
Wheeling Ambulance 42 was set up as the triage center due to the large number of affected individuals. As nearly 100 workers waited outside, firefighters worked to reduce CO levels through ventilation. The Box Alarm was temporarily lifted, but more workers arrived and reported symptoms, leading to a reactivation of the alarm and an escalation to the second level. Additional ambulances from Prospect Heights, Highland Park, Barrington, Glenview, and Des Plaines joined the effort, bringing the total number of responding units to over ten.
Larry Shapiro, a local photographer, captured several images of the incident. His photos show paramedics preparing patients for transport, emergency crews arriving, and firefighters monitoring the situation. Some workers were taken to Glenbrook Hospital, Lutheran General Hospital, and other nearby facilities. After 13 individuals were safely transported, the Box Alarm was finally called off, and the remaining ambulances were released.
Meanwhile, in a separate incident, Buffalo Grove firefighters responded to a small fire just a block away. They were assisted by an Arlington Heights ambulance and Northbrook Tower 12. More photos from the scene can be viewed in the gallery [HERE].
