Ambulance stolen from local hospital (more)
The Daily Herald recently published a follow-up piece regarding the theft of an Arlington Heights ambulance from Northwest Community Hospital last week. The incident unfolded under the veil of darkness when, according to police reports, Samantha Sligar quietly exited Northwest Community Hospital and climbed into the driver's seat of an unattended and unlocked ambulance. It was around 4 a.m. on Friday, while two Arlington Heights paramedics were busy restocking supplies after wheeling a patient into the ER, that Sligar made off with ambulance No. 4.
By the time the sun began to rise, the vehicle was spotted over 150 miles away near Interstate 57. That's when Rantoul, Illinois, police moved swiftly to apprehend her. Sligar was taken into custody after being handcuffed and questioned for allegedly claiming she was en route to her job at a St. Louis department store. However, she also mentioned considering a trip to Marion, Illinois, adding that both her car and wallet had been stolen.
In the hours that followed, the situation escalated dramatically. Arlington Heights paramedics quickly noticed within 20 minutes that their ambulance was missing and immediately sounded the alarm. Rolling Meadows police were the first responders to intercept the vehicle, tracking it onto eastbound I-90. Several squad cars from different jurisdictions joined the pursuit along the highway.
At 4:40 a.m., an emergency broadcast was issued warning of the stolen ambulance. South suburban Matteson police managed to locate the vehicle traveling south on I-57 but encountered resistance when they ordered Sligar to stop. Despite attempts by Manteno and Kankakee County officers to halt the ambulance, it continued to speed recklessly down the interstate, forcing other vehicles off the road. Authorities exercised caution to avoid any accidents, though Sligar evaded capture multiple times, even reaching speeds of 80 mph with its lights still on.
As the ambulance neared the Ford/Champaign county line, authorities faced a critical decision. Troopers assigned to take over the chase were delayed due to a severe crash involving multiple semi-trucks at milepost 211, causing gridlock behind the scene. In response, Rantoul police strategically deployed stop sticks, which successfully punctured the front left tire of the ambulance. Although the vehicle continued moving for some distance, it eventually came to a halt at milepost 250. Sligar was arrested without further incident and detained at the local police station.
Accompanying the story is a striking image of an Arlington Heights ambulance, identified as R2 or Ambulance 4, back in action at a recent fire scene in Long Grove. The photograph, captured by Larry Shapiro, provides a vivid reminder of the chaos that ensued following this unusual event.
