Landlord gets life in prison for fatal Cicero fire
The Chicago Tribune recently published an article about a shocking case that unfolded in Cicero. A former landlord was handed a life sentence without the possibility of parole for orchestrating the deaths of seven residents in a fire he ordered to be set in 2010. These victims, ranging in age from just 3 days old to 20 years, were caught in a blaze that tore through an apartment building he owned.
Cook County Judge Carol Kipperman expressed her deep frustration during sentencing, stating that she would have imposed the death penalty if Illinois laws still permitted it. "This entire case was absolutely horrific," she remarked at the courthouse in Maywood. "He did it purely for financial gain. This trial left me completely speechless."
Despite showing no visible reaction when the verdict was read, Lawrence Myers, now 64, was found guilty by a jury last November. His motives were clear: driven by debt, Myers allegedly paid his maintenance worker, Marion "Andre" Comier, 51, to torch the building in the 3000 block of South 48th Court. The plan was to collect a $250,000 insurance payout and relocate to West Virginia.
However, things went tragically wrong. Prosecutors allege that Comier ignited the fire using gasoline on the back porch, but the flames spread rapidly, trapping the residents inside. Those who perished included Byron Reed, 20; Sallie Gist, 19; their two young sons, Rashon Reed, 3, and Brian Reed, just 3 days old; Sallie's twin siblings, Elijah Gist and Elisha Gist, both 16; and Tiera Davidson, 18, a close family friend.
It took the jury a mere 90 minutes to reach a unanimous decision, convicting Myers of seven counts of first-degree murder—one for each victim. Tragically, the fire spread up the single staircase to the second floor, where all the victims were asleep at the time. Autopsies revealed that the cause of death for everyone was carbon monoxide poisoning due to smoke inhalation.
Two days after the fire, authorities received reports from three individuals who claimed to have overheard Myers and Comier discussing plans to burn down the very same building. Comier, who remains under investigation, awaits trial on similar charges.
As I reflect on this story, it’s hard not to feel overwhelmed by the sheer callousness of Myers' actions. The loss of seven lives—especially such young ones—leaves an indelible mark on anyone who hears about it. It serves as a stark reminder of how greed can drive people to commit unimaginable acts.
