A firefighter narrowly escaped serious injury after falling through a collapsing staircase while responding to a house fire in the West Englewood neighborhood on Wednesday evening. The incident occurred around 5:40 p.m. at a home located on the 6900 block of South Paulina, according to the Chicago Fire Department.

The fire department issued a "mayday" call, which is used when a firefighter is reported lost or trapped. However, officials later confirmed that the firefighter was able to slow his fall by backing down the staircase as it collapsed. He managed to climb out on his own and did not require medical attention.

Despite the alarming situation, all firefighters involved were accounted for, and no injuries were reported. A civilian was initially unaccounted for, and there were concerns that the person might be a squatter. Search efforts were underway, but the final search at the scene confirmed no missing individuals.
