Excerpts from OakLawnLeaf.com: A long-standing conflict between Oak Lawn firefighters and Village Manager Larry Deetjen, primarily focused on staffing issues, has escalated into serious allegations involving "phone sex," "theft of union funds," and "sexual acts during work hours." This ongoing dispute, which has caused tension on both sides, has now taken a surprising turn. Last week, the Village of Oak Lawn unexpectedly released a statement revealing that Bob Lanz, a firefighter and former union official, had filed for a temporary restraining order to halt or delay the village’s investigation into whether he violated policies against sexual harassment. According to the release, the village became aware of information suggesting that one of its firefighters may have engaged in phone sex while on duty multiple times. The statement emphasized that no employee should be forced to witness or hear such acts during work hours. Under U.S. Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) guidelines, sexual harassment is defined as any unwelcome sexual advances, requests for favors, or other verbal or physical conduct of a sexual nature that creates a hostile work environment. However, what makes this case unusual is that no employee has come forward with direct complaints about Lanz. The only reference to harassment comes from the press release, which mentions the idea that employees shouldn’t be exposed to co-workers’ sexual activity while on duty. Lanz is currently serving a five-day suspension, which he is challenging through his union. He was once a high-ranking union official involved in several lawsuits and arbitration cases regarding minimum staffing levels. According to an anonymous source, Deetjen initially accused Lanz of misusing union funds, leading the village to contact the Cook County State’s Attorney. However, it was later revealed that the funds in question were not village or taxpayer money, and the current union leadership never pursued legal action against Lanz or reported the matter to authorities. Deetjen reportedly claimed that a disgruntled firefighter had informed the Oak Lawn Police, who then contacted the State’s Attorney's Office. Despite this, no criminal charges were filed after an investigation found insufficient evidence. It appears this isn't the first time Deetjen has made high-profile claims that failed to hold up under scrutiny. More recently, Deetjen alleged that Lanz was being investigated for a "sex act" while on duty. What was previously referred to as a "sex act" has now been clarified as "phone sex." According to our source, Deetjen has no concrete evidence of any actual sexual act, but he has labeled Lanz’s phone calls to certain numbers as "sex acts." To date, no other employee has filed a formal complaint of harassment, though the village’s press release described the alleged behavior as "sexual misconduct." According to someone familiar with the case, Deetjen reviewed union documents and cross-checked expenses with internet searches, finding two charges linked to companies offering phone sex services. As a result, the fire chief ordered Lanz to provide his personal cell phone records and credit card statements for further investigation. Over a week ago, Lanz received two disciplinary notices. One of them was a formal "Notice of Interrogation and Order," requiring him to produce personal financial records related to "inappropriate financial transactions and engaging in inappropriate sex-related activities while on duty." The case took an unexpected turn when Judge Diane Larson of the Cook County Circuit Court denied Lanz’s motion for a temporary restraining order, citing that he hadn’t demonstrated "irrevocable harm." While she did not rule on the merits of the allegations, she suggested the village wait until January 7th before proceeding with the interrogation. As of the deadline, it remains unclear whether the village will move forward today.
