18 new technologies were born in the Beijing-Tianjin inter-city railway construction

The China Railway 17th Bureau Group has embraced a science- and technology-driven strategy, successfully developing 18 innovative technologies during the construction of the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway. These include the production and installation of 900-ton box-girder racks and ballastless track plates. Out of these, nine technologies have been patented nationally, marking a significant breakthrough in China’s railway passenger dedicated line construction. The group's achievements are recognized as being at the forefront of the global railway industry. Spanning 115 kilometers, the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway is the first high-standard passenger-only line in China to employ ballastless track technology, with a design speed of 350 km/h. Once completed, it will cut travel time between Beijing and Tianjin to just 30 minutes, significantly improving regional transportation and promoting economic growth in both cities. The test section and second section of the project, managed by the 17th Bureau Group, were key components of the entire line, covering approximately 50.1 kilometers or half the total length. Faced with tight deadlines, complex tasks, and new technologies, the team, led by Deputy General Manager Liang Yi and Party Secretary Zhang Fengming, relied on innovation and perseverance. They achieved multiple "firsts" in Chinese railway history, such as erecting the first pier, placing the first 900-ton box girder, and producing the first ballastless track plate. Their efforts earned them recognition as the "locomotive" of the Beijing-Tianjin railway, receiving an award from the All-China Railway General Union. The railway uses a plate-type ballastless track system, and the 17th Bureau Group developed advanced technology for producing and laying these high-precision track plates. Their approach was not just following trends but breaking through traditional methods, leading to a 98% localization rate in materials and machinery used for track board production. Durability is crucial for the railway’s 100-year design life, particularly for concrete. To address this challenge, the team conducted extensive research and over 300 field tests, eventually developing a high-performance concrete mix and an asphalt cement mortar. This innovation was patented as a national invention. The project also required numerous specialized large-scale equipment, which involved high costs and technological complexity. The group invested hundreds of millions of yuan and collaborated with research institutes and manufacturers to develop more than ten types of specialized machinery for passenger railway construction. Most of these devices are fully domestically developed, with intellectual property rights and patents secured. Through these efforts, the 17th Bureau Group has not only contributed to the success of the Beijing-Tianjin Intercity Railway but also set a benchmark for future railway projects in China and beyond.
