In recent days, a significant milestone was achieved as China's largest independently designed air separation unit successfully went into operation at Anqing Petrochemical, producing high-purity oxygen and nitrogen. This marks the end of China's long reliance on imported large-scale air separation equipment, showcasing the country's growing technological capabilities in this critical industrial sector. The successful implementation of this project places China among the global leaders in air separation technology.
Anqing Petrochemical has taken on the responsibility of boosting domestic industry development by adopting an advanced, independently designed hollow splitting device for the first time. The air separation unit was developed collaboratively by Hangzhou Oxygen Group, Shenyang Blower Factory, and Hangzhou Steam Turbine Co., Ltd., with the Ningbo Engineering Company handling construction and installation. The Sinopec headquarters played a key role in coordinating efforts through multiple localization conferences, addressing major issues related to compressors, steam turbines, and overall project management. Anqing Petrochemical worked closely with all parties involved, ensuring the successful execution of the project.
The core equipment, including the largest air compressor in China, represents a major technological advancement. Compared to traditional double-outlet steam turbines, this system offers better load adjustment and significant energy savings, although it also brings higher technical and construction challenges. To manage these risks, the engineering and R&D teams worked together since March 2004, drawing from the operational experiences of imported units and continuously refining the design. After more than two years of dedicated effort, the largest air separation plant in China was finally completed at Anqing Petrochemical.
The facility is designed to produce 48,200 cubic meters of oxygen per hour, providing essential raw materials for a synthetic ammonia plant with an annual output of 330,000 tons and a urea fertilizer plant capable of producing 580,000 tons annually. This project not only supports the "oil to coal" feedstock initiative but also strengthens China's self-reliance in critical industrial infrastructure.
