The white LED driver market is experiencing rapid growth, driving intense competition among chip suppliers. To stand out, companies are focusing on developing advanced charge pump solutions that can meet the increasing demand for higher backlight power in larger and more sophisticated portable and wireless devices. Manufacturers are also emphasizing the importance of matching LED brightness with the chip's performance to ensure consistent display quality.
However, OEMs are particularly focused on improving the efficiency of switched-capacitor (charge-pump) power supplies and optimizing boost converters for better performance. Charge pumps are typically used to drive LEDs in parallel, while boost converters are more common for series or hybrid configurations. This distinction plays a crucial role in determining the design and performance of the backlight system.
Charge pump devices are favored by large OEMs due to their compact size, making them a preferred choice for space-constrained designs. Their popularity is also driven by versatility across various applications. An underlying reason for their appeal is the perception that inductor-based power supplies may introduce significant EMI challenges. However, recent advancements in charge pump topologies have made them more efficient and reliable, with differences between chips often lying in subtle application-specific optimizations that provide real-world benefits.
Tony Armstrong, Product Sales Manager at Linear Technology’s Power Division, highlighted the growing demand for dual or even triple displays, including RGB backlights, in modern devices. He noted that the company recently launched the LTC3206, a charge pump designed to meet these evolving needs. He pointed out that current accuracy—how closely the LED current matches the expected value—is critical, but the more complex challenge lies in current matching between LEDs. While 10% current accuracy is acceptable, a mismatch of more than 5% is a major concern for customers.
Additionally, he mentioned that another often-overlooked factor is the overall efficiency of the charge pump, especially how much time the battery spends in direct-on mode versus boosted mode when the voltage drops. These factors significantly impact power consumption and device longevity, making them essential considerations for designers aiming to deliver high-performance, energy-efficient solutions.
