Tangshan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. successfully developed new steel grades for sucker rods

Recently, the newly developed 25MnVYD sucker rod steel grade by Tangshan Iron and Steel Co., Ltd. successfully passed the fatigue performance test at China University of Petroleum. The key performance indicators fully meet the requirements set by the D-class sucker rod steel standard of China National Petroleum Corporation. This achievement is a crucial step toward obtaining the necessary certification for mass market entry. The successful development marks a significant breakthrough in Tangshan's efforts to innovate in sucker rod steel technology, making it the second company in China to master this advanced production method. This innovation not only expands market opportunities but also enhances competitiveness and lowers production costs. Sucker rod steel is a specialized material used primarily in the manufacturing of sucker rods for oil extraction. Traditionally, 20CrMoA has been the most commonly used steel grade in the domestic market. However, due to the high cost of ferromolybdenum, producing 20CrMoA-based sucker rods has become increasingly expensive. In response, Tangshan Iron and Steel prioritized the "research and development of new sucker rod steel grades" as one of its key technical projects this year. A detailed plan was established, with clear research goals and strategies to tackle challenges. The technical team conducted extensive field studies at various sucker rod manufacturing plants and oil fields across the country. Through in-depth analysis of market demands and user needs, they quickly completed the selection of suitable steel types and process design. Laboratory experiments were carried out to refine the chemical composition and optimize the hot rolling process. These efforts ensured the successful development of the new 25MnVYD steel grade, which now offers a more cost-effective and efficient alternative to traditional materials. This advancement is expected to significantly impact the oil industry by improving both performance and economic efficiency.
