The feed industry must achieve leapfrogging from "big" to "strong"
During the "11th Five-Year Plan" period, China's feed industry is embracing a strategic approach of "big raw materials, large security, large enterprises, and large markets," aiming to transition from a quantity-driven model to a quality-focused and cost-effective one. This shift involves moving from extensive operations to more intensive management, reducing resource consumption, and relying less on grain and more on diverse agricultural by-products. The ultimate goal is to transform China from a country with abundant feed resources into a leading force in the global feed industry.
According to the National Feed Work Conference held recently in Jinan, Shandong, the Chinese feed industry has made remarkable progress over the past two decades. In 2005, total feed output reached 107 million tons, accounting for 1/8 of the world’s total, placing China as the second-largest producer globally. The industry's output value reached 274.2 billion yuan, and during the "10th Five-Year Plan" period, the sector grew at an average annual rate of 7.6%. The quality of feed products has steadily improved, with the national qualified rate exceeding 95%.
Zhang Baowen, Vice Minister of Agriculture, emphasized that the feed industry plays a vital role in supporting China's livestock and aquaculture sectors. It serves as a central industry that promotes efficient grain conversion and deep processing of agricultural products. The development of the feed industry should focus on supporting crop planting and breeding industries, boosting farmers' income, and contributing to the construction of a new socialist countryside.
Under the "11th Five-Year Plan," the goal is to achieve safe, high-quality, and efficient development, ensuring supply-demand balance and product safety. The industry structure will be further optimized, technological capabilities improved, and international competitiveness strengthened. A legal framework will be enhanced to ensure the sustainable and healthy growth of the feed sector, providing strong support for the livestock industry.
To realize these goals, nine key tasks have been outlined: building a safe and efficient production system, optimizing feed product structures, adjusting regional layouts, promoting brand strategies, accelerating technological innovation, strengthening feed safety supervision, advancing legal reforms, streamlining administrative procedures, and enhancing media promotion to create a favorable environment for industry growth.
