Weta Digital Partners with Autodesk to Deliver Next Gen Cloud Production

WetaM cloud service brings Weta Digital’s Oscar-winning tools powered by Autodesk Maya to creators worldwide

It's hard to choose a favorite world created by the amazing artists at Weta Digital. From the lush, alien landscapes of Pandora in "Avatar" to the epic creatures and scenery of Middle Earth in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, each project is a masterpiece. Recently, I've been truly impressed by the redesigned Steppenwolf from Zach Snyder's "Justice League." These incredible visual experiences are made possible by Weta Digital’s proprietary VFX and animation tools.

Known for their cutting-edge technology and deep R&D efforts, Weta Digital's tools have always been used exclusively by their in-house team. But that’s about to change. At Autodesk, we're excited to partner with Weta Digital to bring these powerful tools to artists around the globe through WetaM — the first 3D visual effects pipeline available as a cloud service.

WetaM is built on Maya’s open API and transforms Weta's internal tools into a subscription-based cloud service. This means artists everywhere can now access the same advanced workflows that helped create some of the most iconic moments in "Game of Thrones" season 8 and brought giants to life in "The BFG."

The evolving industry landscape

This announcement marks just the beginning of what’s to come for the Autodesk Entertainment & Media Solutions division. As I step into my new role this year, I'm more excited than ever about where the industry is heading. The demand for high-quality visual storytelling has never been higher, and it's only going to grow.

At the same time, the shift toward remote work and leaner teams during the pandemic has changed how content is produced. Creators are under more pressure than ever to deliver more, faster, and better. Innovation isn’t just about making our tools do cooler things — it's also about making them more accessible and easier to use.

To support this, Weta Digital is launching a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) division. This new arm is part of Weta's broader strategy to offer professional and prosumer tools to artists across the entertainment industry. By combining Weta’s best-in-class toolsets with Maya’s powerful platform, they’re bringing creative power to the cloud — and to more artists around the world.

This move will boost creativity and efficiency, fueling our endless desire for new, immersive stories. As more artists gain access to these top-tier tools, I can't wait to see what imaginative worlds they’ll create next.

WetaM is set to launch a private beta this fall. For more details, visit www.weta-m.com.
