Weta Digital Partners with Autodesk to Deliver Next Gen Cloud Production

WetaM cloud service brings Weta Digital’s Oscar-winning proprietary tools powered by Autodesk Maya to creators worldwide

It's hard to choose a favorite world crafted by the amazing artists at Weta Digital. From the lush, vibrant landscapes of Pandora and its Na'vi inhabitants in "Avatar," to the breathtaking vistas and mythical creatures of Middle Earth in "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy, each project is a masterpiece. Recently, I've been especially impressed by the redesigned Steppenwolf from Zach Snyder's "Justice League."

Behind these cinematic wonders are Weta Digital's powerful, in-house visual effects and animation tools—developed through years of research and innovation. These tools have always been used exclusively by the studio's team, but that's about to change.

At Autodesk, we're excited to partner with Weta Digital to bring their groundbreaking technology to artists around the world through WetaM, the first 3D visual effects pipeline available as a cloud service. Built on Autodesk Maya's open API, WetaM transforms Weta's internal tools into a cloud-based platform, offering a subscription model that makes these advanced capabilities accessible to creatives everywhere.

With WetaM, artists will be able to tap into the same workflows and design elements that helped shape iconic moments in "Game of Thrones" season 8 and brought giants to life in the film adaptation of Roald Dahl’s "The BFG." This is a game-changer for independent creators, studios, and anyone looking to push the boundaries of visual storytelling.

The evolving industry landscape

This announcement marks the beginning of an exciting new chapter for the Autodesk Entertainment & Media Solutions division. As I step into my role this year, I'm incredibly optimistic about where the industry is heading. The demand for high-quality, visually rich content has never been higher—and it's only going to grow.

Meanwhile, the shift toward remote work and leaner production teams during the pandemic has pushed the industry to rethink how content is created. Creators now face greater pressure to deliver more, better, and faster than ever before.

Innovation isn’t just about making our tools do cooler things—it’s also about making those tools more accessible. We're constantly exploring new ways to deliver powerful, intuitive experiences that help our users overcome challenges and seize new opportunities.

To support this mission, Weta Digital is launching a new Software-as-a-Service (SaaS) division. This initiative is a key part of Weta’s strategy to bring its top-tier tools to artists across the global entertainment industry. By combining Weta’s cutting-edge solutions with Maya’s robust platform, WetaM is set to bring creative power to more people than ever before.

This move not only boosts creativity and efficiency but also fuels the endless demand for compelling stories. As we expand access to the best tools in the business, I can't wait to see what incredible worlds will be imagined and brought to life next.

WetaM is set to enter private beta this fall. For more details, visit www.weta-m.com.
